Project Description
Atlantis Wastewater Treatment Plant 3
Bahamas
The Atlantis Resort relies on three desalination plants to supply the 5 million gallons per day required to meet the guest needs. Plant 3 was built with four each, 0.5 MGD units that utilized 250 HP reciprocating membrane feed pumps operating in parallel with isobaric energy recovery units. In December 2018, Atlantis contacted Gemini to see if there was a newer pump available that could replace the existing reciprocating pumps. Replacement part costs and long lead times was impacting the staff’s ability to keep the plant operating while vibration related to pump operation was causing high pressure piping failures. After reviewing the plant and having discussions with Danfoss, we proposed replacing one of the four units with an APP 86 axial piston pump controlled by a Danfoss FC202 Aqua Drive VFD for evaluation.
The new pump revised low and high pressure piping, inlet cartridge filter and electrical system were designed, procured, fabricated, shipped, installed, and commissioned in less than three months. The new pump eliminated the need for lubrication oil and the smooth operation eliminated the need for discharge dampeners while eliminating vibration related piping failures. Based on the performance of the first pump, all of the reciprocating pumps have been replaced with APP 86 units. In July 2019, Gemini replaced one of the failing isobaric energy recovery units with a system consisting of twin iSave70s. The new system eliminating the need to replace the failing booster pump and high-pressure flowmeter.
